Hand-To-Hand Skill Costs:
All civilian characters and UN Spacy Officers start with the HTH Basic skill which counts as one (1) skill.
All UN Spacy Variable Fighter characters automatically start with the HTH Expert skill, depending on their OCC, which counts as two (2) skills)
To upgrade to HTH Martial Arts or HTH Commando, players must replace their existing HTH with the skill they chose and expend the necessary skill points from their “Other Skills”.

For Example:
Brian Cameron is a civilian war correspondent with the HTH Basic skill, but wants to upgrade to HTH Martial Arts. He has 10 Other Skill slots to choose Other Skills with, but since the need to upgrade to HTH Martial Arts needs 3 skill slots, he can only choose 7 Other Skills left.

If Brian was a UN Spacy Variable Fighter Pilot, with the HTH Expert skill plus 12 Other Skill slots, but wants to upgrade to HTH Martial Arts, he needs to expend two (2) skill slots, so his remaining Other Skill slots will only be 10.

HTH Basic: 1 skill
HTH Expert: 2 skills
HTH Zero Gravity: 2 skills
HTH Martial Arts: 3 skills
HTH Commando: 4 skills

OCC availability restrictions:
Players upgrading to HTH Commando requires GM approval before the upgrade.

Tips on selecting Skills
This game is not all about combat try to make a well rounded character. You may think your getting tons of combat bonuses but you might your character's in trouble when punching or shooting is not an option,

Most of you will be Variable Fighter Pilots.
You have 12 skills to choose from and three are automatically piloting skills.

Typically players choose skills like this:

(Related Skills)
Pilot Skill A, Pilot Skill B, Pilot Skill C,
Athletics, Boxing, Gymnastics,
Martial Arts, Wrestling.

(Secondary Skills)
Intelligence, Strategy/Tactics, Demolitions and WP Skill A.

That combination of skills is great to have for Mecha fighters and Hand to Hand commando stuff but this is character that is pretty helpless in any other situation. What will your character do with a flat tire? How about using a computer? It's the Zentraedi that only think about combat skills. Most human are capable of functioning outside a cockpit.

Think about skills that you know that are common knowledge.

For example:
Cook - At someone in most families know how to cook.

Basic Mechanics - Don't a lot of car owners try doing minor repairs own their own?

First Aid - Don't most house holds keep a first aid kit. Your characters are in a war RPG. People are going to get hurt.

Swimming - Don't a lot of people know how to swim? Sure there doesn't seem like that many mission around a swimming pool but any evil GM can tossed your character in the water and watch you drown.

Pilot Automobile - You have to pick 3 piloting skills. Most people know how to drive a car. Imagine your character was kidnapped, you escape and there’s a car. Too bad you don't know how to drive. I hope you know how to run.

Computer Operation - You must be using one right now.

Now there are some people that don't how to swim or cook. You don't need all these skills but they are among common knowledge that you should consider. Also select skills that reflect your character's back ground. If you wrote that your character was born in a fishing village and once thought about being a computer programmer be sure your skills reflect this. If your character has only combat related skills than why doesn't your background explain he was a street punk carrying a Uzi for the Mob where he learned how to fight.

Think about including a domestic or technical skills don't you think your characters have a hobby?

To make your character well rounded you can try some thing like this. That will still allow you to be fighter but you wont be helpless when confronted by a toaster.
